Future of Work in Africa

From conversation to evidence. From evidence to action. An Africa-led initiative connecting dialogue, strategic foresight, professional development and partnership.

The initiative

Shaping work around Africa's people, priorities and potential.

Artificial intelligence, automation, changing labour markets and demographic transitions are reshaping careers, organisations and economies. Africa has an opportunity to do more than prepare for a future designed elsewhere.

The Future of Work in Africa Initiative brings high-level dialogue, research, strategic foresight, professional development and partnerships into one practical platform.

Our aim is to move the Future of Work conversation from discussion to practical, Africa-led action.
Our journey so far

Each stage builds on the one before it.

From continental convenings to individual career reflection and practical learning, the initiative has become a connected progression rather than a series of isolated events.

Artificial Intelligence

Adopting technology responsibly while keeping people and value in view.

Health

Building resilient workforces and systems that support wellbeing.

The horizon

From convenings to a Pan-African platform.

Isolated events and periodic conversations will not be enough. The proposed Africa Future of Work Think Tank is an Africa-led platform envisioned to connect governments, the private sector, academia, development partners, civil society and young leaders around the changing world of work.

Its role is to anticipate workforce challenges and opportunities, strengthen labour-market intelligence and turn timely evidence into practical recommendations.

  • Anticipate workforce trends
  • Generate useful evidence
  • Strengthen strategic foresight
  • Translate knowledge into action
The work ahead

Building a fit-for-purpose workforce in real time.

The Career Cafe is committed to actively contributing, in real time, to building a fit-for-purpose workforce in Africa through the African Future of Work Think Tank and the Africa Work Futures Summit.

African Future of Work Think Tank

The African Future of Work Think Tank is a lean, Africa-led, data-driven and research-intensive platform dedicated to building a fit-for-purpose, future-ready workforce. It generates real-time labour market intelligence, strategic foresight, policy analysis and actionable evidence to guide governments, employers, academia and development partners. Its work spans education, artificial intelligence, health, agriculture, entrepreneurship and foresight, with a strong focus on inclusion, youth leadership, gender equity, reskilling and translating evidence into action.

Africa Work Futures Summit

The Africa Work Futures Summit is The Career Cafe's flagship continental convening on the future of work. It brings together leaders from government, business, academia, civil society, development institutions and young people to move from analysis to coordinated action. The Summit will showcase evidence, emerging workforce trends, practical solutions and partnerships, while generating measurable commitments, pilot initiatives and policy dialogue. It is designed as a platform for Africa to anticipate change and actively shape its workforce future.
